Robert L. Olivarez, a native from Saginaw, Michigan, is the Founder and CEO of Vanguard Academy Public Charter School.  Under his leadership and guidance, Vanguard Academy has been recognized with many academic awards and distinctions.  His leadership has allowed Vanguard Academy to be the only school in the Rio Grande Valley to be awarded the 5 Star Financial Award from the Texas Education Agency, an award that recognizes an academic institution’s ability to obtain adequate resources from a limited budget.

Mr. Olivarez has achieved multiple degrees.  His educational roots began at Southwestern Assembly of God University, where he received his first bachelor’s degree in Christian Education.  He continued his studies at Saginaw Valley State University and achieved a minor in English, History, and Science.  While at Saginaw Valley, Mr. Olivarez also received his master’s degree in School Administration.  Mr. Olivarez then continued his studies at Eastern Michigan University.  Where he received a master’s degree in Counseling, with a major in Industrial Arts and a minor in Vocational Education.

Mr. Olivarez has devoted himself to serve his community for many years in every aspect of his career.  As part of his community service, he has served on the Board of Teen Challenge – Rehab Center for 8 years and has served on the Juvenile Court Advisory Committee.  Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Olivarez proudly served his church, participated in a construction mission trip to South America, and supported various organizations in the community of Saginaw.

Mr. Olivarez had an 8 year career as a Kinder through twelfth grade school educator and 12 years as a State Farm Insurance Agent in Michigan.  Mr. Olivarez’s maintained a passion in education and decided to retire from the business sector and embark on a new journey by designing a public charter school of the Fine Arts to help children find their “Purpose in Life”.  This journey brought Mr. Olivarez to the Rio Grande Valley in August of 2000 to begin the application process.  In July of 2001, Vanguard Academy received its charter school application approval and opened it doors to begin serving 35 students in a disadvantaged community.

Under Mr. Olivarez’s leadership and vision, Vanguard Academy has grown to over 2,400 students, serving Kinder through Twelfth grade at three successful campuses.  A fourth campus is currently under construction and will open in the fall of the 2016 school year.  The passion and commitment of every employee at Vanguard Academy serves every student with “A Purpose in Life and A Reason for Learning.”
