Laptop Troubleshooting Guide

Welcome to the Vanguard Academy Technology Department's Laptop Troubleshooting Guide! If you're experiencing issues with your laptop, follow these simple steps to troubleshoot and resolve common problems quickly.

Check Power Supply

  • Ensure that the laptop is plugged into a power source using the AC adapter.
  • Check for any loose connections or damage to the power cord and adapter.
  • Look for indicator lights to confirm that the laptop is receiving power.

Battery Check

  • If the battery is low or not holding a charge, connect the laptop to power and allow it to charge for at least 30 minutes before attempting to turn it on.

External Displays

  • If using an external monitor or projector, ensure that the correct display mode is selected (e.g., extend, duplicate, or projector only).
  • Check the video cable connections between the laptop and external display device.

Restart the Laptop

  • Save any open files and restart the laptop to refresh the system and resolve software-related issues.
  • If the laptop is unresponsive, press and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds to force a shutdown, then turn it back on.

Peripheral Devices

  • Disconnect any external devices (e.g., USB drives, printers, external hard drives) from the laptop and restart it.
  • Reconnect peripherals one at a time to identify if any specific device is causing the issue.

Software Updates

  • Check for and install any available operating system updates and driver updates for your laptop.
  • Ensure that antivirus software is up to date and perform a full system scan for malware or viruses.
